5 questions with Ruco Chan

SINGAPORE – Facing the paparazzi every day is common for celebrities and some have dealt with the pressure better than others. And, as Hong Kong star Ruco Chan can attest to, life isn’t a bed of roses when the paparazzi come knocking on your door.

Interestingly, his latest project is Eye In The Sky, a 20-episode TVB crime thriller that deals with life in front of the lens and how you can never escape the gaze of, well, just about everyone, it seems.

“After shooting Eye In The Sky, I’m now afraid of the paparazzi,” Chan said with a laugh. The 38-year-old was in town last Friday to promote the series with co-stars Tavia Yeung, Tony Hung, Jin Gang and Gigi Wong. “For the past two years, I’ve noticed that the stories published in the papers by the paparazzi are highly exaggerated, so I’ve been pretty wary since.”

That did not stop him from having fun: He staged a mini concert with fellow colleagues Nancy Wu and Sharon Chan in Canada over the Chinese New Year period.

“It was very fun. We received a lot of red packets because it was Chinese New Year and there are a lot of Chinese in Canada. We visited the Niagara Falls and it was a good experience because it was frozen. It typically doesn’t freeze, so it was great having a different view (of it).”

Q: What was your biggest challenge filming Eye In The Sky?

A: Of course, I have to say I feel lucky being able to shoot with Kevin Cheng and Tavia Yeung because they are top in their field. Kevin has not filmed a show with TVB for a while and I told him I didn’t want to waste this chance to work with him because he has a lot of fans in China and I want to take this chance to act well. I think this is unseen pressure and a challenge.

Q: You are dressed casually in the show. How would you describe your personal style?

A: It depends on how I’m feeling that day. I do, however, prefer classic styles. As an artiste, you need to have a style you can call your own. Even though fashion trends come and go, you need to have your own style. If we follow these trends too closely, it won’t represent the best of us. We aren’t models walking on the runway after all.

Q: Describe your daily get-up.

A: I have many different outfits. When I’m working, I lean towards sportswear as it’s very comfortable, makes me feel relaxed and makes it easier while on the go.

Q: What item do you think every man should own in his wardrobe?

A: To me, it’s a pair of spectacles. I’ve always liked wearing spectacles since I was young. I think wearing them makes me look good and gives me an edge. It accessorises an outfit and brings out a certain feel to your get-up.

Q: Do you have any wishes for the Year of the Goat?

A: My wish for the New Year is for Hong Kong to be peaceful and happy. Let bygones be bygones and whatever that can be resolved be trashed out. If the country isn’t at peace, then the citizens living in the country will be unhappy. Zhang Weifang

Eye In The Sky is airing on TVB First (StarHub TV Ch 860) every weeknight at 9pm.
