SINGAPORE — In Brother’s Keeper, the latest hit drama series from Hong Kong broadcaster TVB, actor-singer Edwin Siu plays one of the two leads, who are half-brothers. His character, Lo Wai-son, grew up selling peanut brittle from a cart for a living in Macau, but leads a comfortable life after opening several shops.

“Brother’s Keeper is a show that I really like very much,” he shared. “At the TVB awards ceremony in Hong Kong last year, the show received many nominations, too. Hopefully the result will be the same in Singapore.”

He was talking about tomorrow’s Starhub TVB Awards, which will be held at Marina Bay Sands, for which he garnered four nominations including Favourite Actor, Favourite Male TV Character, Favourite On-Screen Couple and Favourite Theme Song.

Q: Did you grow up eating peanut brittle as well?

A: I ate very little of it in the past, but now I eat a lot of it. And because of the show, I now also know how to make peanut brittle. Whatever you saw in the show was really handmade by me. A chef came on board and taught me the skills and I learnt it immediately.

Q: Is this one of your more memorable roles to date?

A: Because this show is shot from the 1980s to the present, this is definitely more memorable. And I’m very knowledgeable about the storyline because it’s a very real story — the making of peanut brittle, selling it from a cart, to opening many stores in the present. This was inspired by a real story so there was a lot of emotion while filming it. And we filmed in Macau, where the real-life peanut brittle boss initially started his business. In fact, where we filmed were the original locations of where he first sold his sweets. So while filming the show, I identified very closely with it. Furthermore, I like this role a lot because this person is basically someone who did not give up on his dreams. I think this is something we can emulate.

Q: How would you describe your personal style?

A: My personal style is quite fuzzy because some people say that recycling (outfits) is also a fashion trend. I guess I would describe my style as an environmentally conscious one. I will use the same outfits for different occasions.

Q: But do you shop a lot?

A: Not a lot. I have a lot of outfits at home that I’ve yet to wear and I don’t have the heart to throw away, but you know how trends come and go, and return again after several seasons, so you never know. I might be donning something trendy now from before. (Laughs) I would probably also buy something new and pair it with my existing clothing to make it look new too.

Q: What do you look for in what you wear?

A: My daily outfit needs to be comfortable, especially when I’m travelling or going through immigration. It is a hassle to take out my belt and everything else. My aim is that every time I walk through the metal detector, it would not go off. I need to wear those type of clothes! (Laughs) ZHANG WEIFANG
