Marc Jacob’s curveball campaign

LONDON — Sometimes it pays to have famous friends. Take Marc Jacobs — the fashion designer has been posting photos of some of the celebrities adorning the brand’s Autumn/Winter 2015 (AW15) campaign on Instagram since the end of May (he started with fashion and music icon Cher); and there has been no let-up in the number of participants.

And the all-star cast for Marc Jacobs’ AW15 campaign continues. His latest modelling “acquisitions” include actress Winona Ryder and film director Sofia Coppola. For Ryder, it is the second appearance in a Marc Jacobs campaign — she famously starred in his Spring/Summer 2003 campaign after having been charged with shoplifting a number of Marc Jacobs garments from a Saks department store in Beverly Hills.

Coppola, of course, is a long-time friend of Jacobs, having first met him in 1992 when he was working for Perry Ellis. She has since starred in Jacobs’ fragrance campaigns, as well as with the designer during his tenure as creative director of Louis Vuitton.

“As I write this and look at all the portraits of David’s (Sims, photographer) beautiful campaign, it touches me so deeply to see the profound effect this cast has on my life and work,” wrote Jacobs alongside the latest crop of images.

It is no surprise that these models are not your usual pretty faces. After all, Jacobs loves a curveball campaign star. For his previous campaigns, he tapped Miley Cyrus, looking despondent on a post-apocalyptic beach; Victoria Beckham, legs akimbo inside a giant shopping bag; Jessica Lange, the sexagenarian beauty campaign babe.

Cher, of course, kicked off his campaign — the first image from which was released via Jacobs’ personal Instagram account. “The amazing and beautiful CHER! Photographed by David Sims for our Fall/Winter campaign,” he commented alongside the photo of Cher robed in black and sitting in front of a red backdrop, before teasing: “This is just the beginning … More to come!!”

Next, it was Willow Smith, daughter of actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. “Photographed by David Sims, this season’s ads feature friends, each of whom evoke a sense of intrigue and inspiration and collectively provoke a true consideration for individuality,” wrote the designer on Instagram alongside her image. “Here today I would like to share (not CHER) with you first, the talented, stylish and charming Willow Smith.”

Following in the footsteps of Cher and Smith were Red Hot Chili Peppers’ frontman Anthony Kiedis and his brilliantly-named, seven-year-old son Everly Bear. The question all fans are asking now, of course, is who will be next? THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
