What’s ahead for Zouk at its new Clarke Quay address

SINGAPORE — Zouk is celebrating its last birthday bash at Jiak Kim Street. The clubbing institution turns 25 on Saturday (May 28) with a party to mark its silver anniversary. It’s going to be an especially bittersweet one as the club will be moving to its new premises in Clarke Quay in the later half of the year.

The top question on everyone’s minds must be: What’s going
to change?

Zouk’s head of marketing and events Sofie Chandra shared that some elements of Zouk will remain, in terms of programming and design, as one of the architects working on the new Zouk also designed its Jiak Kim Street space. “Zouk and Phuture are part of the new establishment for sure,” she added. As for Velvet Underground, Chandra declined to reveal its fate but said there will be two other new outlets in the Clarke Quay establishment.

The new Zouk, she added, will maintain the spirit of the club despite the change in address. “For us, it’s always been about the people — the community, our customers, DJs and staff. About 25 per cent of our staff have been with us for more than 15 years, so we hope some of the feeling (of the old Zouk) will still be there.”

For now, there is no confirmed date for the move.

“We’re still waiting for the completion of the new place,” said Chandra. “We don’t know when we can move yet — everything depends on when it will be ready.”

Meanwhile, Zouk is focused on delivering the best experience tomorrow night. The club will be using “assets” like photographs and videos, installations and project mappings to deck out the club. DJs from the past and present will also be spinning music across different stages of Zouk’s history. And the club will be debuting a series of anniversary-exclusive collectibles such as the Zouk Eye mascot and Zouk warehouse facade toys, which will be given out randomly to party-goers at the Silver Jubilee Party. Try to get your hands on one — for old times’ sake.
