SCO 20th ANNIVERSARY GALA CONCERT: JOSHUA BELL AND SCO

The Singapore Chinese Orchestra is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a one-night-only gala concert featuring world-renowned violin virtuoso Joshua Bell. April 9, 7.30pm, at Esplanade Concert Hall. Tickets from S$35 available at SISTIC.

THE IMMORTAL BARD

It has been 400 years since the death of the world’s most renowned playwright and poet William Shakespeare, and to pay tribute to the Bard, a group of wandering minstrels blur the lines between actor and audience in an up-close and joyful rendition of Shakespeare’s most memorable scenes, monologues, soliloquies and characters. April 9, 3pm to 4pm, Open Stage at the library@esplanade. Free admission.

KRANJI MARSHES GUIDED WALKS

NParks’ regular guided tour of the Kranji Marshes takes you to places not accessible to the public just yet. You get to see the interesting wildlife and flora of the area. CELLULOID VOID: THE LOST 
FILMS OF SOUTH-EAST ASIA

Get re-acquainted and engage with eight South-east Asian films that have been lost through the passage of time. Featuring important film titles from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, the exhibition looks to highlight the cultural value and historical context of these works, and present their remnants through both original and reproduced archival materials. GARDEN CITY: 2011-2016

Artist Deanna Ng re-examines the meaning of a garden city with images of Singapore captured at rare moments that reflect how she perceives Singapore — as an urban city within a garden. Until June 12 at the Community Wall at the Esplanade. Free admission.

ASEAN PULSE EXHIBITION

SOUTH ASIA AND THE ISLAMIC WORLD

A selection of highlights and new acquisitions from the Asian Civilisation Museum’s South Asian and Islamic art collections are on display in the Foyer on the second floor. This gallery provides visitors an opportunity to explore the arts of Hinduism, Jainism and Islam within the region and beyond. Until June 30, Asian Civilisations Museum. ONCE UPON THIS ISLAND

This series of contemporary works by Singapore artists explores the stories and lives that surround us and abound on this island we call home. Featuring selected works from the Singapore Art Museum’s permanent collection as well as artwork commissions, the exhibition looks at what it means to live in contemporary Singapore. On-going at the Learning Gallery at Singapore Art Museum. Opening hours: 10am to 7pm (9pm on Fridays).

NAVY MUSEUM

Come and learn more about the Singapore Navy – how it began, the challenges the early sailors faced and how the Navy has transformed itself into a fighting unit. There are interactive computer games that let you test your mettle, as well as static displays of guns and other components taken from our early warships, including those from onf the first navy ships, the RSS Panglima. The Navy Museum is at 112 Tanah Merah Coast Road (just outside the Changi Naval Base, next to the SAF Yacht Club). Open Mondays to Fridays 9am to 5pm; Saturdays 9am to 3pm. Closed on Sundays.
