Let the kids run wilder than their imagination in the one place they can do it all — Canberra. Climb aboard a real submarine at the Australian War Memorial, build a time-travelling robot at the National Museum of Australia, ride a bobsled at Corin Forest, crack a “dinosaur egg” at the National Dinosaur Museum and satisfy their sweet-tooth with an over-the-top milkshake at Patissez. What’s more, many of the city’s attractions offer free entry and are located minutes away from one another. Start planning your Canberra family holiday now at visitcanberra.com.au.

EXPLORE THE WONDERS OF SCIENCE

No family trip to Canberra is complete without a visit to Questacon — The National Science and Technology Centre. Home to more than 200 hands-on exhibits, kids can free fall down a 6m slide and experience an earthquake. Head to Wonderworks to explore colour, movement, light and sound in a unique way. Those below the age of six can play at Mini Q, a custom-built environment with exhibits like Baby Space, Role Play and Water Play.

MAXIMUM FUN IN A MINI WORLD

It’s a small, small world at Cockington Green Gardens. The park offers a display of miniature villages and buildings amid manicured gardens and lush landscapes. There is also an international area with miniature representations of 30 countries, a Rose Room indoor exhibit and a garden cafe. Hop onto the mini steam train for a ride through the park, or have a go at controlling the tiny trains around the dual tracks.

EXPERIENCE THE GREAT OUTDOORS

A 40-minute drive from the city centre, Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve is a great place to discover Australia’s aboriginal culture and wildlife, like echidnas, lyrebirds and Northern corroboree frogs. Find out more with ranger-guided walks and indigenous activities. There are also 22 walking trials and a Nature Discovery Playground.

INSPIRE YOUR LITTLE SPORTS FAN

See how Australia’s elite athletes have been preparing for the Rio 2016 Olympics at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). You may even spot some of the top athletes in training. Feeling inspired? Test your sporting skills at Sportex, an educational and engaging sports experience where you can try wheelchair basketball, rock climbing and football penalty shoot-outs.

GET IN TOUCH WITH YOUR ANIMAL INSTINCTS

Enjoy two attractions in one at the National Zoo & Aquarium. The park features a range of native and exotic animals as well as a large inland saltwater tank. Kids will enjoy feeding the animals like giraffes, tigers and emus. Or, join a tour to go behind the scenes. For a one-of-a-kind experience, stay at Jamala Wildlife Lodge and sleep in accommodation that lets you get up close to the animals.
