LONDON — Prague is the cheapest city in Europe for booze, with a beer costing just S$2.54 on average, according to a new survey.

LONDON — Prague is the cheapest city in Europe for booze, with a beer costing just S$2.54 on average, according to a new survey.

The Czech capital knocked Budapest, which was last year named the best for bargain hooch, off its perch in Britain’s Post Office’s annual alcoholic drinks barometer.

It calculated the total price of 12 different beverages, from a bottle of lager to a dry martini, in 16 locations across Europe to produce its rankings.

Unsurprisingly, Eastern European cities dominated, taking all the top five spots, but popular destinations that are not considered cheap, including Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona and London, snuck into the top 10.

Prague topped the table with an accumulative cost of S$58 for the dozen drinks, including a S$3.17 glass of wine, a S$5.71 vodka and orange, and a S$4.11 brandy.

Marbella, Spain, was the most expensive location surveyed, where a beer costs S$6.92, a cocktail S$16.21 and a scotch and soda, S$17.52. The total cost of the 12 beverages came to S$145.20.

Though the cheapest overall, Prague was, however, deemed the most expensive city in Europe to buy a bottle of Champagne, with the average bottle reportedly costing S$111.02. Tallinn in Estonia was cheapest for bubbly at just S$40.73, while in London a bottle typically costs S$58.44.

The single most expensive drink recorded across the 16 locations was an S$17.96 dry martini in London, though the United Kingdom capital ranked ninth overall.

Dublin in Ireland boasted the most expensive beer (S$8.92) and ranked 11 out of 16 destinations overall.

Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money said: “Our research shows that the cost of a special celebration evening out can vary dramatically, depending on your choice of drink and which city you visit.” THE TELEGRAPH
