SINGAPORE — SilkAir has unveiled a new look for its cabin crew today (April 10). Designed by Singaporean fashion designer Alexandria Chen, the one-piece uniform has an asymmetric neckline and seagulled patterned georgette bow pin. It comes in two colours: Aqua blue for junior cabin crew and plum red for senior flight attendants. It will be worn by the cabin crew beginning April 15 on all flights.

“The aesthetics were just as important a consideration as the practicality of the design,” explained Chen, a graduate of Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. “The new SilkAir uniform is stylishly cut and fitted with a defined waistline, which makes it easy to wear, flexible and comfortable, allowing cabin crew the ease of movement as they carry out their duties.”

Leslie Thng, Chief Executive of SilkAir, described the launch of the new uniform as a “milestone” after 11 years. “The new design captures exactly what our brand stands for today — a blend of style and sophistication with a touch of modernity consistent with the changing times. It symbolises our goal of making every point of our customers’ experiences on-board an absolute ‘Joy to Fly’.”

This is the carrier’s fourth update to its uniform since it started 26 years ago. Homegrown designer Celia Loe designed SiklkAir’s first seagull motiff dress before giving way, in 1994, to a Balenciaga-designed outfit comprising a floral blouse, skirt and fitted jacket. The most recent one-piece wrap dress was created by one of its cabin crew in 2004.
