Checklist: Food markets in Asia

SINGAPORE — One of our favourite food diplomats, Anthony Bourdain, confirmed last week that he was opening a massive food market in New York inspired by the “delicious, diverse food centres that Singapore (for instance) enjoys”. He added the market would see “a dream list of chefs, operators, street food and hawker legends from around the world”. Sounds like a delicious idea, doesn’t it?

Well, if we ever tire of our awesome hawker centres, we don’t have to travel all the way to New York. We can just jet off to other similar spots around the region to satiate that all-in-one craving.

PENANG’S NEW LANE

Located off Jalan Macalister, next to Sunway Hotel, New Lane is a delicious stretch consisting of about 50 stalls. Most businesses start from 6pm, and the biggest draws here are the pig’s organs porridge, cuttlefish salad with kang kong and apom manis stalls.

JAKARTA’S KAKI LIMA NIGHT MARKET

Despite only starting last October as a new initiative by the city’s governor, Joko Widodo, this night market, held every Saturday along Jalan Merdeka Selatanhas, has grown so popular that there are plans to replicate this in other parts of the capital. There are about 100 food stalls selling all sorts of food items ranging from Betawi cuisine to herbal drinks.

BANGKOK’S VICTORY MONUMENT AREA

The good food is matched by the crazy chaos here. There is the legendary “boat noodles alley” next to the canal while Soi Ari is where you’ll find more vendors dishing out the likes of papaya salad, “son-in-law’s eggs” and Thai desserts. Serene Lim
