Checklist: Japan’s cherry blossoms

SINGAPORE — It’s sakura season in Japan and there’s still time to fly off and catch those exquisite flowers at their blooming best. There are lots of pretty places you can park yourself for a bout of hanami (flower viewing). Here are three to note down in your calendar.

SINGAPORE — It’s sakura season in Japan and there’s still time to fly off and catch those exquisite flowers at their blooming best. There are lots of pretty places you can park yourself for a bout of hanami (flower viewing). Here are three to note down in your calendar.

KYOTO (EARLY APRIL)

Make your way to Daigoji Temple on the second Sunday of April to witness a re-enactment of Japanese warrior Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s cherry blossom parade. Watch 1,000 cherry trees in full bloom and join in song and dance to commemorate the event.

HIROSAKI (LATE APRIL)

This town in the Aomori prefecture is known for its annual sakura matsuri, held in its park from April 23 to May 6.Word has it that the first cherry blossoms of Hirosaki were planted in this very spot in 1715 and now, the park boasts about 2,600 cherry trees framing its picturesque castle. Stay till evening when the park is lit up for an even more unforgettable experience.

MATSUMAE (EARLY MAY)

Hokkaido is usually the region to head to before sakura season ends in May. And Matsumae Park, nicknamed Village of Sakura, is one of the best spots on the island. After all, there are more than 10,000 trees, spanning 250 species, for sakura-crazed fans to gawk at during its festival from April 26 to May 18. SERENE LIM
