SINGAPORE — So you’ve been watching what you eat and working out regularly for a couple of months, but somehow the digits on the weighing scale does not seem to be going down.

That's because you could be sabotaging your weight-loss plan with one or more of these bad bedtime habits.

SNACKING WHILE WATCHING YOUR FAVOURITE PROGRAMMES

Love crunching on crisps while you watch your favourite TV shows? Distracted snacking not only affects the quantity of food you consume, but also how much you remember eating – we've all been through the shock of holding an empty bag of chips after the end of an episode, right?

If you really can’t forgo snacking while being a couch-potato, make sure you measure out a careful portion of snacks instead of sitting down with the whole pack.

CHECKING YOUR PHONE IN BED

It’s a known fact that the blue light emitted by your smart devices’ LEDs can affect sleep cycles, so make sure you stay off your phone or iPad for at least an hour before bedtime.

Studies have also found that people with a consistent, healthy sleep routine tend to have a lower percentage of body fat than those with irregular sleep hours. A good way to rid this bad habit is to set a recurring reminder to switch off all devices an hour before bedtime! Who knows, you might get fewer breakouts too.

SETTING YOUR ALARM TOO LATE

If you’re a serial snoozer who always ends up skipping breakfast to get to work on time, it’s time to kick the habit. Consuming a healthy, high-protein breakfast can help you eat less during the day, and therefore make you gain less body fat. All you need is some annoying that guarantees you wake up, such as the Puzzle Alarm Clock app (where you have to solve a puzzle before you can switch off the alarm) or Sleep If U Can, where you have to “register” a photo of your home. The catch is that to turn off the alarm, you have to actually take a photo of that part of your home again.
