A GALAXY OF MOONS & STARS THEMED GEMSTONE EXHIBITION

To celebrate the Singapore Night Festival’s 10th anniversary, The Gem Museum showcases a collection of unique gemstones with the theme A Galaxy of Moons & Stars. Visitors can expect to see moonstones, star sapphires and star rubies at the exhibition. There will also be a short presentation to educate visitors on gemology — the study of gemstones. Visiting hours will be extended to 10pm during the festival.

Japan fans, rejoice! This two-day event, featuring Japanese cosmetics, fashion, food and lifestyle, returns this weekend. Look forward to savouring Gold Leaf ice cream by Face Bistro — The Skin and Beauty Connoisseur cafe, and Azuki Croissant and Warabi Mochi by Japan Rail Cafe. There will also be a live performance by Japanese singer-songwriter Yumemi Ikeda and a special appearance from the Ruby The Dancing Dog mascot.

CARNIVAL AT PEOPLE’S PARK COMPLEX

People’s Park Complex will host a carnival at which visitors can enjoy Chinese opera performances, and participate in stage games and lucky draws. The opening ceremony takes place at 11.30am today, while the event will start at 12pm tomorrow and on Sunday.

CENTRE 42 PRESENTS: LATE-NIGHT TEXTING

Centre 42’s Late-Night Texting event, which drew over 3,000 attendees last year, returns this weekend. The event features 30 performances from seven groups, including 10-minute short plays written by local playwrights Dark Matter Theatrics. There will also be poetry sessions with Proletariat Poetry Factory, as they craft poems based on words provided by the audience. New additions to the event include The Latecomers, a group of improv comedians who will turn the audience’s suggestions into jokes on the spot.

Enjoy a relaxing Saturday afternoon listening to tunes from local bands at this annual music showcase. Participating bands include local indie-electronic duo .gif, singer-songwriter Adir Kaisan, and rock band The Intimate Friends. Tickets are S$8 at the door.

THE JAM: A PANGDEMONIUM FUNDRAISER

Five renowned local singers will assemble for a one-night-only musical at the Esplanade Concert Hall. The event aims to raise funds for Pangdemonium, a local theatre company founded by actor Adrian Pang and his wife, Tracie. The performers are singer Nathan Hartono, singer-actor Benjamin Kheng from folk-pop band The Sam Willows, singer-songwriter Inch Chua, singer Tabitha Nauser and actor-musician Andrew Marko. Tickets are priced from S$30 to S$200 at Sistic.

HEADS UP: ASIAN RESTORED CLASSICS 2017

Annual film festival Asian Restored Classics (ARC) will be showcasing 12 films in this year’s edition and will have a Southeast Asian focus. One of the films slated to show are 1985 Taipei Story, starring Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien who will be taking on an acting role in this film, along with singer Tsai Chin, and will be shown on Aug 31. Another film feature is the 1971 Hong Kong movie Fist of Fury starring Bruce Lee and Hong Kong actress Nora Miao on Sep 2.
