SINGAPORE - There will be a special male escort for ONE Women’s Atomweight champion Angela ‘Unstoppable’ Lee when she makes her wat to the cage for her title defence in ONE: Dynasty of Heroes at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on May 26.
His name? Joseph Schooling.
Singapore’s Olympic 100m butterfly champion will be accompanying Lee as part of her entourage for the five-round main event.
The 21-year-old University of Texas undergraduate, who is a mixed-martial arts fan, said he was first invited by ONE Championship last November to be part of the entourages of the Singapore fighters.
“I was definitely keen to show my support for my fellow Singaporean athletes by walking alongside them. However, it was not possible due to school commitments.
“This time around, I definitely do not want to miss the chance to walk alongside Angela Lee. I am looking forward to the event on 26 May. It will definitely be spectacular.”
Lee, who successfully defended her title against Taiwan’s Jenny Huang in Bangkok on March 11, said: “I am very happy to be including Joseph in my walkout as I defend my world title for the second time, this time right here in Singapore.
“I can’t wait to hear the roar of the crowd as their two world champions walk out to the cage, one holding the ONE Championship belt and the other with the Singapore national flag.”
Lee captured the inaugural ONE Women’s Atomweight World Championship with an awe-inspiring victory over Mei Yamaguchi in 2016. She remains unbeaten inside the ONE Championship cage.
