They include the likes of LionsXII players Faris Ramli and Sahil Suhaimi, and Courts Young Lions starlets Irfan Fandi and Adam Swandi.

In a press release, FAS said 29 shortlisted players were assessed by Young Lions head coach Aide Iskandar and his team of coaches after the squad’s final phase of preparations, which included a centralised training stint, an overseas training tour in Japan and international friendlies.

Coach Aide Iskandar congratulated the players who made the cut and said that excluding players from the squad “was one of the toughest decisions he has ever made as a coach”.

“My coaches and I had sleepless nights over it. It was a very close call for the nine players who were dropped because competition for their positions was very tight,” he said in the press release.

He thanked the nine players who were not selected for all their efforts and assured them that “they are still young, and have long playing careers ahead of them”.

“Congratulations to the players who have made the final 20,” said Aide. “However, they are aware that this is just the beginning of the final lap of their SEA Games journey, and that they have to remained focused and disciplined."

The Young Lions are grouped with the Philippines, Myanmar, Indonesia and Cambodia. They will face the Philippines in their first match on June 1 at the Jalan Besar Stadium. Tickets are available from the SEA Games ticket website.
