SINGAPORE — A road accident involving an SBS transit bus at Hougang Ave 9 on Friday morning (Sept 30) left one man injured, according to a witness.

The man, who is in his 50s, was found trapped under the bus after the incident, which happened outside the Ci Yuan Community Club.

According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), his right leg was injured, and he was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

A passenger onboard the double-decker bus, No 72, Mr Bernard Chua, said that he was sitting at the back in the lower deck of the bus and was reading the newspaper when he heard a loud bang.

According to Mr Chua, who is 45 and a security officer, the windscreen of the bus was shattered. Two other female passengers sitting near the front, he said, left the bus when the driver opened the doors.

“I normally don’t take this bus service, but it just so happened that I was on my way home after collecting my pay and I boarded the bus,” said Mr Chua, adding that the driver seemed all right and that all the passengers eventually disembarked.

He said that he had called for the police and an ambulance. The SCDF, he added, arrived after 10 minutes and the man was conveyed to hospital at around 11.15am.

The SCDF had despatched one fire engine, one red rhino, two fire bikes, one ambulance and one support vehicle.

Tammy Tan, senior vice president, corporate communications, SBS Transit, said: "Our priority is the well-being of the injured gentleman and we have been trying to get in touch with him or his family. We were at the hospital earlier today but were unable to establish contact with any of them. We will continue to reach out. Meanwhile, we are assisting the Police with their investigations."

It is unclear what caused the accident. The police said they are continuing to investigate the matter.
