SINGAPORE — Only three months into operations, the Social Service Office at Ang Mo Kio (SSO@AMK) has already seen 1,300 residents coming forward to seek assistance.

Launched by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Members of Parliament (MP) Ang Hin Kee and Seng Han Thong today (Oct 10), the 14th Social Service Office in Singapore will serve Ang Mo Kio’s total population of 178,000 residents.

According to General Manager of SSO@AMK Ang Chee Meng, apporoximately 60 to 70 per cent of these walk-ins have received either financial or job placement assistance since the centre opened its doors in July this year.

Some of the walk-ins were sole breadwinners of their families who struggled to make ends meet, while others were residents who lost their job. One in four was aged 55 years and above, who were unable to work and had little family support.

MP Mr Ang shared that Ang Mo Kio currently already has non-governmental organisations who step forward to offer assistance but are unable to broadly cover every single resident. SSO@AMK will act as a social assistant by “bringing services to the residents instead of bringing residents to the services”, he added.

SSO@AMK is located at AMK 3G Centre. It operates from 9am to 6pm on weekdays and is closed on weekends and public holidays.
