SINGAPORE — Twenty-two motorists have been arrested for drink-driving early this morning (April 17) during an island-wide operation.

A total of 72 drivers were stopped and tested for alcohol consumption, of which 22 men, aged 22 to 60, proved to be driving while intoxicated.

The Traffic Police said the highest reading on the Breath Evidential Analyser test was 82 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, which is more than double the prescribed legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

If convicted, drink-drivers will be prohibited from driving for at least a year. They will have their driving licences revoked and have to retake and pass the theory and practical driving tests again.

First time offenders could also be fined between S$1,000 to S$5,000, and have their driving licences disqualified for a period of 12 to 48 months. Repeat offenders face a maximum fine of S$30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years. They may also face up to six strokes of caning should death or serious injury be caused.
