SINGAPORE — Senior citizens from the Pioneer Generation in Singapore will get to enjoy the three per cent discount on Mondays at NTUC FairPrice supermarkets for another year, until Dec 31, 2016.

Separately, a spokesperson for NTUC Health Co-operative told TODAY that the seniors will also continue to get a 6.5 per cent discount at all Unity pharmacies until the end of 2016.

These benefits, originally set to end on Dec 31 this year, are part of the Pioneers OK! programme by NTUC’s social enterprises arm to honour the Pioneer Generation — seniors who are aged 65 and above last year, and who obtained Singapore citizenship on or before Dec 31, 1986.

By end-November, the three per cent discount scheme has helped this group of shoppers save a total of S$3.6 million since its launch in October 2014, FairPrice said in a statement today (Dec 21).

Its chief executive, Mr Seah Kian Peng, said the supermarket chain hopes to continue to offer greater savings to pioneers to buy their daily essentials and “stretch their dollar”.

“This is our small way of thanking and honouring our pioneers who have given so much of themselves for Singapore,” he added.

The chain has also designated priority payment queues for these pioneers at all FairPrice supermarkets and hypermarkets islandwide, where customers are encouraged to give way to them in these queues when making payment.

To make use of this priority queue and to enjoy the discount on Mondays — subject to a S$200 cap per transaction and other conditions — shoppers have to show their Pioneer Generation cards, issued by the Government.

Another scheme that seniors have been tapping into is the existing Seniors Discount Scheme, which was introduced in 2002, where those aged 60 and above enjoy a two per cent discount when they shop on Tuesdays.

Over the same 14-month period from October 2014, this scheme has allowed these shoppers to save more than S$2.8 million, FairPrice said.
