SINGAPORE – Stall operators appear to be willing to fork out more to participate in the Chinese New Year bazaar in Chinatown next year.

At the close of a tender exercise yesterday (Dec 24), about 450 stalls have submitted bids for the bazaar. The highest bid received was S$12,200, a 20 per cent increase from last year.

Organisers said the food street’s revamp and reopening have helped to draw back the crowds.

The bazaar will run from Jan 30 and the organisers have put in place measures to ensure food safety will not be compromised.

Mr Lim Gek Meng, the person in charge of the Festive Street Bazaar and member of the Chinatown Chinese New Year Organising Committee, said: “This year, we are working with the relevant authorities to enable consumers to shop with ease. We have specially requested all merchants to submit their food safety management licence and a photocopy of their identity card to the authorities. We will also conduct spot checks to determine if they are licensed for food safety.” CHANNEL NEWSASIA
