SINGAPORE — Minister of State for National Development Maliki Osman said 630 Housing and Development Board (HDB) rental tenants have progressed to own a home in 2011 and last year.

He said the HDB has various measures to help households own their homes. There are currently 48,200 households living in HDB rental flats and their average length of stay is 11 years.

Dr Maliki was replying to a question in Parliament by Member of Parliament (Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC) Zainal Sapari on issues of HDB rental flats.

He said there are 1,900 registered applicants waiting to be allocated a rental flat.

Dr Maliki added that since 2011, HDB has received 23,900 applications.

However, 13,700 applicants are not eligible because most of them could afford to purchase a small flat or had family support. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
