High drama at Still Road South after man tries to evade police roadblock

SINGAPORE — Seven people, including three Traffic Police officers, were injured in the early hours of Sunday morning (April 10) after a 27-year-old driver breached a police roadblock, causing a four-vehicle accident at the junction of Eunos Link and Bedok Reservoir Road.

SINGAPORE — Seven people, including three Traffic Police officers, were injured in the early hours of Sunday morning (April 10) after a 27-year-old driver breached a police roadblock, causing a four-vehicle accident at the junction of Eunos Link and Bedok Reservoir Road.

Police said in a statement that the driver had refused to comply with an officer’s instruction at the roadblock along Still Road South, before speeding off in his vehicle.

“In the ensuing pursuit, an accident involving the male driver’s car, one police vehicle and two taxis occurred at the junction of Eunos Link and Bedok Reservoir Road at about 4.14am,” the police said.

The male car driver and his passenger, three Traffic Police officers, a taxi driver and his passenger were injured and conveyed to hospital. The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was to the alerted to the incident at 4.20am, and dispatched one fire engine, one red rhino, two support vehicles, and four ambulances to the scene.

Two of the casualties were conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, while another five were sent to Changi General Hospital.

The male driver had “put up a violent struggle and assaulted a Traffic Police officer in an attempt to evade arrest”, said the police. The male driver and his passenger were also subsequently arrested for traffic and drug-related offences.

Police investigations are ongoing. In its statement, the police added that any person convicted of an offence of Voluntarily Causing Hurt to a Public Servant shall be punished with a jail term of up to 7 years, and may also face a fine and/or caning.

"The Police... take a serious view of members of public who abuse public servants. Perpetrators who assault public servants or public service workers can be expected to be dealt with to the full extent of the law," said the police. 

The police further advised members of public to cooperate with us when approached by officers. "Any evasion of a road block can cause potentially serious harm to other road users and also to our Police officers," the statement said.
