SINGAPORE — The police have nabbed 75 suspects for shoplifting at shopping malls along Orchard Road in the first quarter of this year.

The suspects, aged between 13 to 73, have stolen almost S$11,000 worth of retail items such as groceries, apparel and luxury goods, said the police in a statement today (April 23).

More offenders have been caught as a result of increased enforcement by retailers, said the police.

“The police have been working closely with retailers to deter and detect theft in their outlets. Many retailers have enhanced their security measures through better training of their staff and strategic placement of CCTV cameras,” the statement said.

Shop theft is punishable with up to seven years’ jail term and a fine.

The police also reminded retailers to take necessary precautions against theft, including displaying expensive items in locked display shelves, putting up advisory signage against shop theft, and using an electronic tagging system.
