SINGAPORE — Around 900 needy residents have benefited from free health screenings that were held at the Jurong Medical Centre. The screenings started in August and ended yesterday.

The screenings were organised by the South West Community Development Council (CDC), volunteers and health organisations. Residents were checked for several conditions such as chronic diseases.

This is the third year free screenings have been held at the medical centre. This year, however, residents were able to be screened for colorectal cancer, which is one of the top three cancers diagnosed among Singaporean men. Residents were also given NTUC health vouchers for a follow-up medical consultation and some received free spectacles and hearing aids as well.

Mayor of South West District, Ms Low Yen Ling, said: “With early detection and prevention, as well as access to medical attention, we hope to improve the situation our vulnerable residents face. To this end, today’s integrated health screening aims to catch those who fall through the cracks if the illnesses go undetected.” CHANNEL NEWSASIA
