Accreditation for railway, transportation engineers

A professional accreditation programme has been extended to railway and transportation engineers, giving them an avenue to earn recognition for their expertise.

A professional accreditation programme has been extended to railway and transportation engineers, giving them an avenue to earn recognition for their expertise.

As the rail network undergoes rapid expansion in the coming years, the Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES) has added railway and transportation as the sixth engineering discipline under its chartership programme, which was launched in 2013.

The IES, Land Transport Authority, Singapore Workforce Development Agency and public transport operators SBS Transit and SMRT Trains signed a memorandum of understanding yesterday, and applications for the chartership can be made by the end of the year.

IES president Chong Kee Sen said the chartership would recognise the skills and mastery acquired by railway engineers who have worked for at least four years in the industry.

IES will set up a unit to determine the standards by which railway and transportation engineers will be assessed for accreditation.

“(It) will provide validation to engineers in this discipline, giving them a title that endorses their experience, expertise and competence,” he said, adding that the title would boost engineers’ professional standing and give them a leg-up in further career development.

The other engineering disciplines listed for IES’ chartership programme are aerospace, chemical and process, environment and water, marine and offshore, and systems engineering.
