AHTC seeks more time to provide details on appointed accountant

SINGAPORE — The Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) has requested for more time to provide information on its appointed accountant, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) said today (Feb 5).

SINGAPORE — The Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) has requested for more time to provide information on its appointed accountant, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) said today (Feb 5).

The Workers’ Party-run AHTC had been given until today by the Court of Appeal to nominate one of the “Big 4” accounting firms to audit its accounts.

In response to queries, an HDB spokesperson said: “AHTC has informed HDB that they require more time before they can provide HDB with the relevant information concerning their proposed accountants”.

The spokesperson said the HDB has “no objection” to the request but has asked AHTC to write to the Court of Appeal to request for an extension of the deadline.

In response to queries, AHTC’s chairman Pritam Singh said the town council will be writing to the Court to request for an extension as it “needs more time to provide information relevant to the appointment of the accountants to the HDB”.

He said that the town council had initiated contact with one of the Big 4 accounting firms on Jan 23, a day after the Court of Appeal’s order.

On Jan 22, High Court judges ordered the town council to nominate an accountant from one of the “Big 4” firms, namely KPMG, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers. This was after AHTC’s latest nomination for Ardent Accounting was rejected by the HDB as the firm was “not suitably qualified”.

Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon had said in his closing judgement then that this was a matter of public interest as it involved public funds and should not be delayed further.
