AMK Town Council general manager under CPIB probe described as ‘hardworking’

SINGAPORE – He began working at Ang Mo Kio Town Council as a property manager. In 2013, Mr Victor Wong, currently the subject of investigations by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau, was promoted to general manager at the town council. 

On Friday (Dec 30), the Straits Times reported that Mr Wong, an employee of CPG Facilities Management, the Managing Agent of the town council, was asked to go on leave by the company in September, after the town council received a complaint about him. He was removed from his post last month.

When contacted, Ang Mo Kio Town Council vice-chairman Darryl David confirmed that Mr Wong is assisting in investigations. 

CPG Facilities Management said it has been suspended Mr Wong from his duties, pending outcome of the investigations. The company added: "We are unable to disclose any further information as investigations are still underway."

When TODAY visited the offices of the town council on Friday, staff declined to comment on the matter.

A general manager at another town council described Mr Wong as a quiet man. He last met Mr Wong four or five months ago at an event, and he looked “normal,” said the general manager, who declined to be named, adding that there was no indication that anything wrong was going on.

Former Ang Mo Kio GRC Member of Parliament Inderjit Singh, who stepped down last year, said he had not worked with Mr Wong directly in the past, but had met him on a number of occasions.

Calling him “soft spoken” and “hardworking”, Mr Singh said: “I was surprised to read that he’s being investigated.”

When contacted on the case, a CPIB spokesperson said: “The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau has received a report on the matter and is currently looking into it.”

CLARIFICATION: An earlier version of this story reported that Mr Wong started working at the Town Council in 2013. The Ang Mo Kio Town Council has since clarified that Mr Wong was promoted to general manager at the town council in 2013.
