SINGAPORE — A man was sent to hospital and 80 people were evacuated after a 68kg ammonia gas cylinder ruptured in the Coca-Cola Singapore building this morning (July 31).
The Chinese man complained of difficulty in breathing and felt discomfort on his face and throat, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a press release.
“Prior to conveying him to hospital the SCDF had to decontaminate him by washing him thoroughly with water. The individual was conscious when conveyed to hospital,” said the SCDF.
The SCDF said it arrived in about six minutes of being alerted to the ammonia gas leak. By then, the company’s emergency response team had already isolated the source of the leak by shutting off connecting valves to the ruptured cylinder.
The SCDF’s hazardous materials specialists flushed the residual ammonia gas from the ruptured cylinder with a water jet. Fan blowers were also used to ventilate the affected room to help dissipate the gas. The cyclinder had been in a room on the first floor the three-storey building.
