SINGAPORE — A mock culling exercise involving 500 chickens was held this morning (July 17) at a local poultry slaughterhouse to test the Agr-Food and Veterinary Authority's (AVA) readiness in dealing with a possible bird flu outbreak in Singapore. Exercise Gallus VII was is the AVA's seventh such exercise since it was first held in 2002. Singapore has not experienced a bird flu outbreak. The exercise, involving about 100 people from AVA and workers from Soonly Food Processing Industries, tested AVA's crisis management framework and operational readiness of its staff, as well as the readiness of poultry slaughterhouse workers. Emergency response staff donned personal protective equipment as part of the exercise, which included the culling and disposal system of poultry, the decontamination system at a poultry slaughterhouse and incineration at National Environment Agency’s designated incineration plant. The field exercise is to “test (the) operational readiness to respond to an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) or bird flu”, the AVA said. A table top exercise was first held on Monday to test the AVA’s crisis management network.
