SINGAPORE — The sight of thick black smoke billowing from an 11th storey flat in Tampines caused alarm on New Year’s Day (Jan 1).

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was tipped off to the fire at Block 496C, Tampines Street 43 at 1.24pm. Its officers had to force their way into the flat.

The fire had broken out in a bedroom and was extinguished with one water jet. Our reporter on the scene tweeted that it was brought under control by about 1:50pm. She said the two apartments directly above the affected unit had soot marks after the blaze was put out.

No one was home at the time of the incident and no one was injured, said SCDF.
