Bishan now home to two large dengue clusters

SINGAPORE — Bishan is now home to two of the largest active dengue clusters on the island, as dengue numbers continue to rise.

SINGAPORE — Bishan is now home to two of the largest active dengue clusters on the island, as dengue numbers continue to rise.

As of last Wednesday, there have been a total of 235 dengue cases in Bishan. The number of cases in Singapore has increased in recent weeks, with the National Environment Agency (NEA) reporting 272 new cases in the week ending July 11 — the highest number of weekly cases reported so far this year.

Mrs Josephine Teo, Member of Parliament for Bishan-Toa Payoh, visited homes in the Bishan area yesterday to observe dengue prevention efforts by residents, the NEA and the town council.

Two-thirds of breeding spots in the area have been within homes, and the town council said it is working on improving residents’ knowledge on dengue and mosquito breeding.

“We want to raise their awareness,” said Mrs Teo, who is also Senior Minister of State (Transport and Finance). “We’ve therefore mobilised volunteers through the grassroots movement to share this knowledge and raise the awareness among our residents.”

The warmer months of June to October are also the traditional dengue peak season. NEA CEO Ronnie Tay said that since the two clusters were formed in Bishan, more than 50 officers have been deployed daily to carry out inspections. More than 12,000 inspections have been carried out so far for about 5,000 homes in the cluster areas. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
