SINGAPORE Rescuers have extricated the bodies of the two SMRT maintenance staff who were killed in a track accident near the Pasir Ris MRT station on Tuesday morning (March 22). The train that was involved in the accident was also seen slowing moving back into the station around 1.15pm.

Their bodies were brought into the train station's platform, and several unidentified members of the public were seen entering the station around 1pm. The Pasir Ris station has been closed since the accident took place around 11.10am.

A family member of a signalling staff who witnessed the accident said his brother was traumatised by what he saw. In a statement earlier, SMRT said the accident took place "along the track at a servicing point near the Pasir Ris station". No further details were given.

Police at the scene have set up a cordon as well as put up barriers to keep bystanders away from the scene of the accident.

Meanwhile, commuters should prepare for a longer disruption of train services between the Paris Ris and Tanah Merah MRT stations. SMRT said earlier that it expected services to resume around 1.15pm.

But the operator's latest update via Twitter merely urges commuters to "seek alternate transport options when travelling to or from these stations". No updated timing was given as to when services might resume.
