Well-known brands quick to jump on the Schooling gold-wagon

SINGAPORE — Several local and international brands are rushing to celebrate Joseph Schooling’s historic achievement of winning Singapore’s first-ever Olympic gold medal, and also capitalise on it.

On Saturday morning (Aug 13), the 21-year-old clinched gold in the men’s 100m butterfly final in a new Olympic record time of 50.39sec, defeating 23-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps from the United States, South Africa’s Chad le Clos and Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh, who all finished joint-second in 51.14sec.

Since then, TODAY has found at least seven well-known local companies offering discounts or promotions to celebrate Schooling’s victory.

Mobile taxi booking application Grab got the ball rolling on Saturday afternoon when they posted the following message on their official Facebook and Twitter page: “Congrats, Joseph Isaac Schooling! We’re proud of you here! You and your family can grab a ride on us for free anytime.”

But the Olympic champion and his family will not be the only ones to benefit from Grab. The company also announced on their website that it is offering a S$3 discount for GrabCar rides to or from 23 swimming complexes in the country until the end of the month.

Users will need to key in the promotion code ‘SCHOOLING’ when booking their GrabCar and the offer is limited to 10,000 redemptions and three per user.

Schooling, who will arrive at Singapore’s Changi Airport at 5.30am on Monday, on flight SQ67, received another gift when Singapore Airlines presented him with his very own Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Elite Gold card, and a million KrisFlyer miles.

This means that the 16-time South East Asian (SEA) Games gold medalist will get to relax in more than 1,000 lounges around the world, get extra check-in baggage allowances, priority airport check-ins, boarding and baggage handling as well as waived or discounted service fees on his travels.

Fans who wished to welcome Schooling home were also in luck. Local taxi operator ComfortDelGro announced on Twitter that users who key in the promotion code ‘5039’ on the ComfortDelGro booking app would enjoy S$10 off their taxi fare to Changi Airport between 3am to 5am this morning. The offer was limited to the first 1,000 customers.

Comfort Delgro also announced that all 17,000 of its ComfortDelGro Taxis will display “Our Pride J Schooling” on their taxi rooftop signs for one week starting Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday afternoon, bakery chain BreadTalk gave away 100 Olympic products for free to the first 100 customers at their shops islandwide.

Fast food chains have also jumped in on the act of celebrating Schooling’s win with various promotions for their customers.

Fast food chain McDonald’s will be giving out free Chicken McNuggets (six pieces) to the first 50 customers at all McDonald’s Restaurants (excluding iFly, RWS, LIDO, Gardens by The Bay and institutional stores) on Monday from 11am onwards.

Not to be outdone, rival Burger King will be giving away free golden Thick Cut fries (small) with any a la carte burger purchased in any of their outlets in Singapore until the end of Monday.

Customers will have to flash the advertised promotions on McDonald’s and Burger King Facebook pages to enjoy the promotion.

Meanwhile, Bee Cheng Hiang is celebrating Schooling’s historic feat by giving a 50.39 per cent discount on their 1kg Gold Bakkwa exclusively on their online store.

Health and wellness supplement manufacturer Brand’s has a competition whereby anyone who snaps a photo with a Brand’s promoter islandwide and uploads that photo on social media with the #brandssg can stand to win up to S$5,039 worth of prizes.
