SINGAPORE — The Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC) aims to get Singaporeans from all walks of life to participate in making 50,000 pieces of a traditional Chinese handicraft. The council hopes this will convey the message that everyone can contribute towards creating a more caring society.

This is part of the council’s SG50 event, which will be organised on May 30 at the 12 CDAC centres and at Ngee Ann City Plaza.

Titled “A little from all, together it’s more”, the event will also showcase the talent and creativity of Singapore’s homegrown musicians and artistes through Chinese oldies, xinyao and pop song performances.

Sharing sessions for the elderly will also be held on topics related to their well-being.

Mr Baey Yam Keng, chairman of the CDAC Volunteers Engagement and Development, said: “This is the shape of a heart, in the form of a Chinese knot. So it’s a portrayal of the strong Chinese culture and tradition as well. We hope that many people would come forward to help us to make the knots — as a symbol, as a gesture of promoting and supporting volunteerism in the community.”

Volunteers from the Council, as well as from the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA) and Resorts World Sentosa, were at integrated resort yesterday, where a dinner treat was given to more than 500 needy seniors.

The elderly also took a tour of the S.E.A Aquarium, as part a project to bring volunteers together to serve and help the disadvantaged.
