Changi Airpot passenger traffic up by 3.2%, on path to record

SINGAPORE — Changi Airport handled 4.78 million passengers last month, up 3.2 per cent compared to the same period last year, as travel to and from South-east Asia, North-east Asia and South Asia rose.

SINGAPORE — Changi Airport handled 4.78 million passengers last month, up 3.2 per cent compared to the same period last year, as travel to and from South-east Asia, North-east Asia and South Asia rose. 

The latest data takes its total passenger movement for the year to 53 million, putting it on track to surpass the record 55.4 million passengers it  handled last year.

Changi serves more than 100 airlines flying to some 380 cities in about 90 countries and territories worldwide. Each week, about 7,000 flights land or depart from Changi.

Last month, aircraft movements grew 3.4 per cent to 29,710 landings and takeoffs, while cargo shipments rose to 173,170 tonnes, a 7.9 per cent year-on-year increase.

Among Changi’s top 10 country markets, China led the gainers at 13.7 per cent, followed by Vietnam at 9.9 per cent and India at 9.8 per cent. 

As for Changi’s top 10 cities, strong traffic growth was observed between Singapore and South-east Asian cities such as Kuala Lumpur, Denpasar, and Ho Chi Minh City. 

Changi has welcomed new services to India, with Air India Express launching four flights a week to Kolkata on Nov 20, and Jet Airways starting daily services to Bangalore on Dec 14. 

On China routes, SilkAir has launched four-times-weekly services to Fuzhou; while Xiamen Airlines increased the frequency of its Singapore-Xiamen services from 14 times a week to 17 times a week from Nov 18. 

In South-east Asia, Myanmar National Airlines increased its Yangon service from seven flights a week to 12 flights a week from Dec 1.
