SINGAPORE — A train with a brake fault at Buona Vista MRT station caused trains heading towards Joo Koon to travel at slower speeds this evening (July 14).

Passengers on the affected train were asked to disembark and board the next train, said Mr Patrick Nathan, Vice-President of SMRT’s Corporate Information and Communications.

Mr Felix Wong, who was a passenger on the affected train, said passengers were asked to alight at about 6.15pm, after staying on the stationary train for about five minutes.

“Passengers were left to stand on the platform without any notice or assistance on alternate modes of transport,” he said, adding that announcements about the delay first stated it would last about 20 minutes, before revising this to 60 minutes. “There seems to be a lack of contingency planning, and the staff (are) unprepared to assist passengers when issues arise.”

Mr Steve Goh, who was also stuck at Buona Vista Station, said there was “bad crowd control”. The escalator was packed with commuters, and this “could have caused injuries”, he said.

Apologising to commuters for the inconvenience, Mr Nathan said the brake fault resulted in an additional 20 minutes of travel time, with normal operations resuming at 6.40pm. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
