SINGAPORE — A female Indonesian domestic helper is believed to have killed the elderly couple in their Bedok Reservoir Road home, although their neighbours were not aware that the couple were living with anyone else.

TODAY understands that the Indonesian is a suspect and has since left Singapore. The police have classified this as a murder case.

The bodies of the couple were discovered after police received a call for help on Wednesday afternoon (June 21).

The wife, 78, apparently had no visible injuries on her while the husband, 79, was found with blood stains on his shirt and sustained neck injuries.

The Chinese evening dailies reported that the foreign domestic worker was with the couple for less than a month. On Wednesday, she is believed to have taken a ferry at Harbourfront Centre, having bought a ticket for the first available boat out to an Indonesian island.

When TODAY visited Block 717 on Thursday night, a wake was set up at the void deck of the public housing block, but no one was present.

Residents there said that they did not know the couple had hired a helper or seen her accompanying them.

The couple’s next-door neighbour, who declined to be named, said that he was not sure who lived with them because their doors were usually closed. The 66-year-old added that he would see people going in and out of the flat at times, but could not tell who lived there.

Two units away, a woman who gave her name as just Madam Sim said that she was also not aware that the couple had a helper.

Madam Sim, 63, daily visits her son’s flat on the same floor, to take care of her grandchild. She said that the couple were close, and the wife was soft-spoken and would always greet neighbours. Before the husband suffered a stroke, the couple would deliver dinner to their son every evening.

Police investigations into the case are ongoing.
