SINGAPORE — Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean met Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli, as well as Chinese State Councillor and Minister of Public Security Guo Shengkun today (April 8) during an official visit to China.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a statement that both Mr Zhang and Mr Guo offered their deepest condolences to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Singaporeans over the recent passing of the Republic’s first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.

“They lauded the valuable contributions made by Mr Lee in laying the strong foundation for Singapore-China relations,” said the MFA.

Mr Teo — who arrived in China yesterday for a six-day visit — and Mr Zhang also affirmed the “substantive and multi-faceted cooperation between Singapore and China”. They agreed that both nations “should find innovative and path-breaking ways to bring our relations to greater heights”, said the MFA. China and Singapore are marking the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year.

During Mr Teo’s meeting with Mr Guo, both leaders also exchanged views on law-enforcement cooperation in tackling transnational crimes such as terrorism, drug trafficking, corruption and cyber security.

Mr Teo will travel to Jiangxi province tomorrow to co-chair the 5th China-Singapore Forum on Leadership with Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Part of China Central Committee and Minister of the Central Organisation Department Zhao Leji.
