SINGAPORE — The motorist involved in the accident along the Central Expressway (CTE) on National Day last year that left four people dead was charged in court yesterday.

Toh Cheng Yang, 35, was charged with dangerous driving causing death as well as driving under the influence of drugs.

The maximum penalty for dangerous driving resulting in death is five years’ jail, while driving under the influence of drugs is punishable with a fine between S$1,000 and S$5,000, or up to six months’ jail.

In the early hours of Aug 9 last year, Singaporean trainee pilot Amron Ayoub was taking his girlfriend Jamie Song Jisoo and her family to the airport when their car broke down near the Yio Chu Kang exit on the CTE.

While they were parked at a chevron to fix the problem, a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) hit Amron, 23, and Song Jisoo, 24, as well as her father Song Jungwoo, 55, and mother Kim Mee Kyung, 53.

Toh was said to be behind the wheel of the MPV when the accident happened at about 3.54am.

Court documents said Toh was allegedly driving beyond the 90kmh speed limit and had consumed drugs.

He was also alleged to be incapable of controlling his car and was driving in an unsteady manner, which resulted in the collision with Amron’s stationary car.

Song Jisoo and her parents died on the spot while Amron was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital but succumbed to his injuries and died the following day.

Song Jisoo’s brother, Mr Song Seoung Hwan, a professional golfer, escaped unhurt as he was by the side of the car jacking it up.

Toh was arrested on the spot and his driving licence has been suspended since then.

During the brief hearing yesterday, defence lawyer Abdul Hamid Sultan requested an adjournment.

Toh is out on S$15,000 police bail and will return to court on May 5. Amanda Lee
