Drop in ticketed attendance for performing-arts events
SINGAPORE — Although there are more people attending a greater number of arts and cultural events here compared with a decade ago, figures released yesterday by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) show a drop in ticketed attendance and gross takings for performing-arts events last year, after hitting an all-time high in 2011.
In its Singapore Cultural Statistics report, MCCY said this was due to a market adjustment after an initial spike of popular musicals brought in by the integrated resorts when they first opened.
Despite the fall, the ministry said the local arts-and-culture scene continues to grow. An average of 23 arts performances and 49 exhibitions were being held daily last year, compared with about 10 such performances and 30 exhibitions a decade ago.
Total tickets sold for performing-arts events increased from 0.7 million in 2004 to 1.2 million last year, and total gross takings have gone up from S$32.8 million in 2004 to S$80.6 million last year.
The report also reflected higher enrolment in full-time tertiary arts courses — 4,492 last year compared to 1,860 in 2004. Government funding for arts and culture was also increased to S$478.9 million last year.
