SINGAPORE — The report on the electoral boundaries lacks accountability, according to Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) secretary-general Chee Soon Juan today (July 26).

He said the basis of the report should be made in a transparent manner. “You cannot continue to draw boundaries without accounting for it, in whims and fancies and that’s not right at all. There is a segment of the population who are very upset that they cannot make meaningful change at the ballot box.”

Dr Chee was speaking to reporters after the party’s walkabout at Bukit Batok. The area is one of three new Single Member Constituencies (SMCs) that were carved out after the electoral boundaries report was released on Friday.

Dr Chee said the party is also considering contesting in areas which it did in the last election. SDP had contested in Holland-Bukit Timah and Sembawang Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) as well as Bukit Panjang and Yuhua SMCs in 2011.

But Dr Chee remained mum on where he will contest. He was barred from running at the 2006 and 2011 elections because he was a bankrupt.

“The most important thing for me really is to get into Parliament. To press, push for these fresh alternatives and to ensure we have that kind of intelligent, substantive debate in Parliament. And I am relishing this opportunity right now,” he said. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
