Electrical, gas, cable detection workers can apply for lifetime licence

SINGAPORE — From next month, electrical, gas and cable detection workers can apply for a lifetime licence instead of renewing their licences every one to three years — a move that will help them save on compliance costs.

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) yesterday said the Lifetime Licensing Scheme, which it will introduce on Aug 1, will help save time and reduce compliance costs for more than 5,000 workers. For example, under the scheme, an electrical engineer will pay a licence fee of S$80 once, instead of having to pay the same amount once every three years to renew his licence. The S$50 application fee still applies to first-time applicants.

The EMA said the lifetime licence could help each worker save up to S$30 per year and existing licensed workers will be converted to the scheme once their current licence expires.

The new scheme will not lead to lower standards and “workers still have to meet the necessary requirements to keep their licence valid — for example, attending refresher courses every five years”, said an EMA spokesperson.

The new scheme is part of an on-going review by the EMA to enhance its rules and licensing requirements to reduce compliance costs for businesses and consumers. Tan Shi Wei
