Electricity tariffs to go up from tomorrow

SINGAPORE — Electricity tariffs will increase by an average of 1.54 cents per kWh, or 7.5 per cent, starting tomorrow (July 1), announced SP Services today.

The new tariff for households has been set at 22.41 cents per kWh, up from 20.87 cents per kWh in the current quarter.

SP Services says the new rate, to last until Sept 30, is due to a 15.1 per cent increase in the cost of natural gas for electricity generation from the second quarter of this year.

Based on average consumption, the average monthly electricity bill for a family living in a four-room Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat may go up by S$6.01.

This will be the first increase in electricity tariffs after four consecutive quarterly declines. In this current quarter, tariffs fell by 10.7 per cent compared to the previous quarter.

SP Services reviews electricity tariffs quarterly based on guidelines set by the Energy Market Authority (EMA). The tariffs for the next quarter have been approved by the EMA.
