Employer fined S$15,000 for not paying maid’s salary for a year

SINGAPORE – A Singaporean woman was convicted and fined S$15,000 for failing to pay her maid’s salary for a year. 

On Wednesday (Sept 13), the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said Li Jun failed to pay her foreign domestic worker’s (FDW) S$420 monthly salary from March 7, 2016 to Feb 21, 2017. 

Li owed a total of S$5,700 to her domestic worker, which has since been paid in full on Sept 7. In lieu of the fine, she could have faced six weeks’ imprisonment.

Reminding employers that they are required by law to pay their domestic workers on time, Ms Jeanette Har, director of the Well-Being Department at MOM’s Foreign Manpower Management Division, said one option they could consider is to arrange for scheduled bank transfer.

“We will take strong enforcement actions against employers who do not pay FDWs their salaries,” she added.

Foreign domestic workers who do not receive their salaries on time should either report the matter to the MOM, or seek assistance from their employment agency, said the ministry.

MOM also encourages the public to report to them if they know of anyone withholding the salaries of their foreign domestic workers at or call 6438 5122.
