SINGAPORE — A fire broke out at a flat in Hougang Street 51 yesterday morning, leading to the evacuation of some residents living nearby.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received a call about the incident at Block 575 at around 10.30am. SCDF officers arrived at the scene shortly and had to force entry into the flat on the sixth storey as the unit’s gate was locked.

Within six minutes, the firefighters put out the blaze, which had started at a prayer altar in the living room.

They also evacuated two brothers in their 20s, who had kept themselves away from the fire by staying in one of the three bedrooms in the flat.

Together with the police, the firefighters evacuated about 20 residents from the sixth, seventh and eighth storeys of the Housing and Development Board block as a safety precaution.

No one was injured, said the SCDF. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
