SINGAPORE — With five incidents of driving against traffic reported in a little over a week, the police are warning that stern action will be taken against those who wilfully do so and urged the public to come forward with information should they witness such incidents.

In a statement on Friday (Jan 6), the police said that the Traffic Police (TP) have already identified the drivers in four of the five incidents. One driver has been arrested, while the other three are currently assisting with investigations.

The five cases follow an incident last month, when a man at the wheel of a silver Mercedes drove against the flow of traffic at high speed along the Ayer Rajah Expressway during morning rush hour, killing a 37-year-old driver and leaving four others seriously injured.

The driver, Lim Chai Heng, 53, has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The police said on Dec 28, at about 12pm, an 85-year-old man allegedly drove against the flow of traffic along Bedok North Street 1 towards Bedok North Avenue 3. The driver is currently assisting with investigations.

On Monday, there were two such incidents. At about 8.35am, a 28-year-old man was driving along the Central Expressway towards Seletar Expressway when he is believed to have lost control of his car, causing it to spin and hit the road divider, before it stopped in the opposite direction of traffic. The driver is currently assisting with investigations. That same day, another vehicle allegedly went against traffic along Gateway Drive towards Westgate Shopping Centre, and investigations are ongoing, said the police.

On Thursday, at about 1.26am, a 30-year-old man is believed to have driven against the flow of traffic along the AYE towards Tuas. After being tracked down, he was arrested for reckless or dangerous driving. Later that day, at about 12.35pm, a 42-year-old male driver allegedly took a wrong turn against the flow of traffic along Cavenagh Road towards Bukit Timah Road. He is currently assisting with investigations.

In the press release, TP said: “Driving against the flow of traffic is a dangerous act and TP will take stern action against motorists who wilfully commit such an offence.”

They also urged motorists to be vigilant and careful when driving or riding along the roads.
