SINGAPORE — Former People’s Action Party Member of Parliament (MP) Dixie Tan has died after a two-month fight with brain cancer. She was 78.
A relative told Channel NewsAsia that Dr Tan, a former cardiologist, had died at Singapore General Hospital just after midnight on Wednesday.
Dr Tan became an MP in 1984, after she was elected unopposed on Nomination Day during the General Election that year. She was one of the first female MPs in Parliament in 14 years, together with Dr Aline Wong and Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon. She represented the constituency of Ulu Pandan until 1991.
She is survived by her husband, retired cardiothoracic surgeon Tan Ngoh Chuan, 83; son Russel, 54; daughters Grace, 50, and Jacinta, 49; and a grandson.
Her wake will be held at the Mount Vernon Sanctuary tomorrow and Saturday, with a service between 8pm and 9pm on both days. A funeral service will be held on Sunday at the Paya Lebar Methodist Church, starting at 3.30pm. MONICA KOTWANI
