SINGAPORE – Commuters will get to enjoy free travel on all stations on the Downtown Line (DTL) when it opens on Oct 21.

In a media release on Tuesday, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said that commuters will be able to travel for free for journeys between all stations of the DTL on the weekend of Oct 21 and 22.

Passengers will still need to tap in and out as per normal at the fare gates, although no fares will be deducted.

The LTA also said that commuters transferring to or from another line at interchange stations – like Bugis and Expo stations, Chinatown and Little India stations - can tap out and tap in again to enjoy free travel on the DTL leg of their journey.

Passengers who are transferring at Bukit Panjang, Newton and Tampines stations – who have to pass through a public area outside the fare gates to change lines – will have to use dedicated fare gates when tapping into the DTL leg of their journey to enjoy the free travel. When exiting those three stations, they can tap out from any of the fare gates, the LTA said.

There will also be a DTL3 Open House on Oct 15 to give commuters and their families a free preview of the DTL3’s 16 new stations. Themed “Rail of Fun”, commuters will be able to enjoy activities at stations of the DTL3 line, from the Fort Canning station to the Expo station.

The LTA said that visitors can look forward to board games and drop by the Knackstop booths at Fort Canning and Tampines stations to pick up souvenirs inspired by trains and buses.
