SINGAPORE — A gas leak was reported this morning (Dec 2) on Boon Tat Street, near Lau Pa Sat, due to a damaged underground gas pipe.

SP PowerGrid (SPPG) was alerted to a gas leak at Boon Tat Link at around 10.24am. “Our emergency response team was immediately deployed to the site. The team discovered that works by a contractor operating in the vicinity had damaged an underground gas pipe,” said a SPPG spokesperson.

“Our immediate priority was to ensure the safety of everyone in the vicinity. The affected area was cordoned off and as a precautionary measure we shut off the affected gas valves to isolate the leak. Gas supply to the area was not affected.” Repair works to the damaged pipe are currently in progress.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received the report at 10.24 am and dispatched one fire engine and one Red Rhino Light Fire Attack Vehicle to the scene.

Gas detectors were used to determine the source of the leak, the SCDF said. The gas supply has since been cut by Singapore Power.

A caller, by the name of Mr Low, informed the MediaCorp Hotline at 11.55 am that Boon Tat Street has been cordoned off by the Singapore Police Force and traffic was not passable at the time of the call.

Mr Low also mentioned that the SCDF and Land Transport Authority personnel were at the scene.

The SCDF has handed the case over to the police.
