SINGAPORE — Visitors to www.google.com.sg today (July 22) will find a special logo commemorating the birth of Singapore’s iconic musician Zubir Said, best known as the composer of the Republic’s national anthem.

A self-taught musician who began his career in Malay opera, Zubir was born exactly 107 years ago in Bukit Tinggi, Mingangkabau, Central Sumatra. Among his achievements, he was a pioneering film music composer during the golden age of Singapore cinema from the 1940s to the 1960s.

Zubir, who left home for Singapore at the age of 21 in 1928, to forge a career in music against his father’s wishes, received his first public recognition when his songs were performed at the Victoria Theatre in 1957.

In 1958, a song he composed was chosen as the official song of Singapore. This song, Majulah Singapura, has become Singapore’s national anthem.

Clicking on the Google Doodle will direct users to a page with search results relating to the famed musician.

Zubir died on Nov 16, 1987 at the age of 80, leaving behind four daughters and a son.

Singapore-themed doodles and have appeared before on Google on occasions such as the National Day and Singapore Arts Festival.
