Greater compliance with employment laws under WorkRight: MOM

SINGAPORE — More employers from sectors that tend to flout employment laws — such as food and beverage, retail, security and cleaning — are complying with these laws, thanks to WorkRight, a government initiative.

Nine out of 10 employers from such sectors now comply with employment laws, up from seven out of 10 in 2013, the Ministry of Manpower said yesterday as it announced that WorkRight has won an award at this year’s United Nations Public Service Awards.

The initiative by the MOM and the Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board took first place in the category of “Promoting Whole-ofGovernment Approaches in the Information Age” for the Asia-Pacific region.

Launched in September 2012, WorkRight aims to ensure that workers, especially low-wage workers, enjoy basic employment rights under the law, such as being paid their salaries and CPF contributions on time. It involved public education efforts as well as enforcement action.

Under WorkRight, inspections on employers increased ten-fold from 500 to 5,000 a year, said the MOM. As of April, more than 42,000 Singaporeans have benefited from the initiative.
